A while ago the question got asked " !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! " It's an interesting question, and it's bizarre to think future enthusiast might not get to experience a new non-turbo performance car. If you look at what's available today it's surprising to see just how few natural cars there are. Here's a rundown of what's left, and who I think will last.

Mazda MX5 Miata - There's a rumor floating around that we'll see a turbocharged Mazdaspeed Miata in the near future. For the foreseeable future though, a natural engine powers the base model.

Honda Civic Si - Perhaps the last sports compact car to not feature a turbocharger (I'm not counting the weakling CR-Z as a performance car). Strict emission requirements killed the old Type Rs so it seems likely they will kill the Si too. On the bright side Honda has finally given us a new turboed Type-R - turbo hot hatch>no hot hatch.

Kinja'd!!!

Scion/Subaru FR-S/BRZ - The Toyoburu's don't have any turbochargers yet, everybody has been expecting a high performance version but it still hasn't happened. So, even after all these years, the jury is still out on a turbo 'Buru, what about the base? Latest rumors say these cars !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! :(

Hyundai Genesis - It's hard to say what will happen to the Gen coupe going forward. Many think it will get Hyundai's V8, so maybe the little Korean coupe will be more pony car than sports car. If that's the case we might see natural V6s and V8s into the coming years.

Nissan Z - The current 370Z has been around for a while, and it's VQ V6 even longer. Nobody's sure about how or when the new Z will arrive. Engine speculation has gone from turbo four to downsized turbo six to holdover NA six. Basically it's anybody's guess as to if the Z will be turboed or not.

Kinja'd!!!

As with manual transmissions and V8 engines American muscle cars are a stronghold of tradition. That's not to say things wont ever change, for indeed they already have -all three have had supercharged versions of their pony cars (not to mention Ford's Ecoboost, or the turbocharged muscle cars of the 1980s). For now the lower end V8s seem safe, but it could only be a matter of time before the boosted engines creep in.

Chevrolet Camaro
Ford Mustang
Dodge Challenger
Dodge Charger/Chrysler 300
Chevrolet SS/Holden HSV

It seems Lexus missed the memo that sports sedans have almost gone entirely turbo/supercharged. Audi and Mercedes have some older versions of their performance cars that will likely be updated with turbocharged engines in the near future, leaving only Lexus with a non-turbo sports sedan. Somewhat ironic given Toyota's glorious turbocharged past.

Mercedes C63 AMG (replaced with a turbo)
Lexus RC F
Audi RS5
Lexus GS F (coming soon)
Infiniti Q60
Mercedes SLK55 AMG

Porsche Cayman/Boxster - With the 911 going all turbo it seems likely the Cayman and Boxster will go all turbo in the near future.

Porsche 911 - The 911 is !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , a possible exception is the GT3.

Kinja'd!!!

These two American icons will probably be among the last cars standing with out a blower/turbine. The top end Corvettes have gone supercharged but the base models seem to have a comfortable formula going. The future of the Viper is uncertain, knowing Chrysler they'll find a way to keep the V10 alive, but they do have a pretty impressive supercharged V8...

Chevrolet Corvette
Dodge Viper

Audi R8 - Audi recently announced the next gen R8 will keep the NA V10, personally I'm skeptical it will stay around long, because they also have a new turbo V8.

Maserati Gran Turismo - Will probably soon get the Quattroporte's turbo V8, or just turbo V6s.

Aston Martin !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! going forward. These engines will likely be based on the AMG GT's V8. That's not a bad thing given that particular V8 seems pretty impressive, yet it will be the end of English NA V8s. The twelve cylinder Astons are another matter. Aston recently updated their venerable V12 so it may have a few years left in it, but it's probably a matter of time before it goes away or gets replaced by a Mercedes unit.

Aston Martin Vantage
Aston Martin DB9
Aston Martin Vanquish

Kinja'd!!!

Both Ferrari and Lamborghini seem likely to keep their non-forced induction ten and twelve cylinder engines as long as environmental regulations will let them. Both companies seem to be toying with saddling their V12s up to a hybrid system (ex. LaFerrari, Asterion) so perhaps NA V12s can live on a while longer.

Lamborghini Huracan
Ferrari 458 (soon to be replaced)
Ferrari FF
Ferrari F12
Lamborghini Aventador
Ferrari LaFerrari

Porsche 918 - All that fuss over the electric motors it's easy to overlook the fact that Porsche squeezes over 600hp out of a 4.8 NA V8.

In case you didn't notice this list is incredibly small. We've got: Miata, Civic Si, FR-S/BRZ, Genesis Coupe, 370Z, Camaro, Mustang, Challenger, Charger, 300, SS, C63AMG, RS5, RC F, GS F, Cayman/Boxster, 911 GT3, Corvette, Viper, R8, Gran Turismo, Vantage, Vanquish, DB9, Huracan, FF, F12, Aventador, 918, and LaFerrari.

My predictions say the American V8 (pony cars, Corvette, LX cars, and we'll lump the Viper in here too) will last the longest. The high end V10/V12s from Ferrari and Lamborghini will probably last a while longer too supplemented by hybrids. On a similar note, I think Toyota, as a company, might be the last to fully adopt turbos. Opting instead for hybrids.

Let me do an easy one

Every Supercharged engine available today

2 engines from America: Hellcat and Z06/ZL1/CTS-V/HSV engine

5 from England: Jaguar/Land Rover's V6 and V8, Lotus/Toyota's 4 and 6 cylinder and the Ariel/Honda K20

2 from Germany: Audi's supercharged V6 and VWs twincharged 4 cylinder

I'm expecting the German ones to kick the bucket first. Mercedes, Mini and Koenigsegg have already replaced their supercharged motors with turbos.

You just have NO idea how funny your perspective is, to someone who grew up in 1970s / 80s. Corvettes with 165 hp. K-Cars. Gas shortages and rationing. The Mustang II when it came out had only a Pinto motor 4 cylinder and an upgrade to an anemic 6. 5 mph bumpers to make your car much heavier and uglier and save your insurance company a few dollars. Gradually things started to get better. Now, cars are insanely faster than they were, and as a recent post discussed, it was partly due to the EPA putting on the restrictions. Plus, now you can breathe sometimes in Los Angeles. Yes, it will be a sad day but I think the engineers and today's tech will keep ICE cars on the road for a while longer. And go drive a Tesla P85D. I drove a "regular" P85 and it is stupid fast. Hopefully all our vintage cars will still be able to go out and play during and after our lifetimes, but the hybrids and electrics have the potential for some serious, if quiet, fun. Here, see how bad it was in 1976, when the fastest US car you could buy was the Corvette—at 124.5 mph. And the Trans Am had 455 cubic inches, and only 200 hp. A pickup truck was in the running to be fastest. The V8 Mustang II did a whopping 105 mph. Things will only get better.

I just can't accept a car in which nothing truly inspiring is happening(to me), where there's no noise coming from the front or rear, something that actually puts a smile on my face.

"Better", is a choice word that I see as truly subjective in this case. From an efficiency standpoint, yes it will be better; but at what emotional and nostalgic cost? Of course no one really cares about that in the end it seems...

The power will return to the garagistas again like it was in the 50's. You tune your older car in your backyard and make it as fast as you want. Make it way faster than most things on the road.

If you're concerned about having an awesome sounding car, like a V12, don't worry. Pick up an old Merc V12 and do that equal length header layout. For years to come, there will be plenty of ways to enjoy ICE vehicle pleasure. If anything, it will help filter out the posers from the true enthusiasts.

Both of my sports/sporty cars have had turbo/bi-turbos. My truck was NA V8 and the tiny bit of turbo lag doesn't bother me. I appreciate NA and displacement, but I can live with what manufacturers are doing these days.

I was going to point out the lack of Aussie HSV Clubsport in this list, but I guess thy would really be a double up of the Chevy SS

Actually, they're pretty cool over at the Tesla—store? If you show up dressed reasonably well, they will likely let you test-drive even if they know or suspect you can't afford it any time soon. They have no idea whether you just cashed in on the latest internet craze. They just ask to see your license, not your credit report. There wasn't even the "let's talk numbers" nonsense. It's more like visiting an Apple store than a regular car dealer, spartan furnishing plan included. The "salesmen", who don't work on commission and so don't have an incentive to pressure you, were only two or three years older than you at one location I visited. Now that even BMWs (and EcoBoost Mustangs) are piping in fake engine noise, you will probably have that as a customizable app on any car in the not too distant future. You could have it sound like an F1 car or vintage Challenger with a six-pack if you like. Sure, it won't be quite the same as the real deal, but it'll be something. And there will always be LeMons for abusing ICE engines.

I'm more worried about self-driving cars becoming mandatory.

Not gonna happen. The tech initially will be expensive and no one who can't will pay for it. Just telling millions of people to take the bus now won't work without a serious upgrade to our public transportation infrastructure, which we also won't pay for.

It will be a neat option on your S-class that will someday trickle down to an option on your Chevy that will someday become cheap enough to be a ubiquitous as an automatic transmission, but this will happen out of consumer choice, not regulation.

is a V12 or V10 that is Hybridnized still considered a Naturally aspirated engine. I mean, yes it's still atmospherical induction not forced but if it has an electric motor "boosting it" then does that not mean it isn't totally "Natural"

I'm very interested to see when Lamborghini will go Turbo and if the Viper will get a Hellcat v8 or will the drastically down size the V10 to a 5.0L or something a strap a Superxharger on it. It would be a lot cheap to just use the HellCat V8

Probably they limit it to avoid challenging faster sports cars. 350ish horesepower will keep it from being compared to Audis and Lexus' etc.

ICEs have a chance to continue on if we are able to crack bio-fuels. At the moment processes are out there that can work but are nowhere near feasible on a large commercial scale. The problem is finding a catalyst that will form a concentration of the stuff we want instead of ending up with a hundred things from the conversion. There are a few graduates at my university currently working on this right now and I hope to god at least one of them is able to make some headway. We can expect most of the fossil fuels to disappear within the next half century. There is more deeper in the ground but the likelihood of being able to access it safely is pretty slim. It really sucks and I am totally against it but hydrogen and electric will at some point take the market share especially if we are able to get our shit together at making batteries that aren't garbage.

The M152 May not be the same powerplant as the M156 but it's still a NA V8 if you wanna throw the little SLK into the performance box.

The sooner we get to a place where there is a viable replacement for the ICE, the better. Like horses, once they are no longer our main source of transportation they are free to be appreciated by true enthusiasts.

I'm not advocating for the party as a whole or any of their past decisions. I'm trying to use their relentless resistance to change as a benefit here. Buy us some fun hoonage time before the speed cameras come out and the self-driving electric cars get mandated.

Strictly speaking no, because the air isn't artificially pressurized (unless you're talking about electric superchargers which may some day come into the picture ). But yeah, a hybrid set up is even worse it terms of "purity" than a turbo.

I'm pretty curious about the Viper too, dropping the Hemi in there would be way more logically, but then the Viper has never been very logical.
